The story has a delightful air of déjà-vu: a worldly bourgeoise prepares to go to the inauguration of the Nouvelles Galeries on the arm of her cuckold and adulterous husband. On the arrival of a telegram, everything in the couple’s life starts to get out of hand. Mistaken identities, declarations of love, dramatic chasing and kidnappings follow on at a frenetic pace. A soprano gets stuck into rap, wrapped up in a bath towel or breaks into song in a ski outfit.
The cupboard doors joyfully slam on the extravagant frills of period costumes. The cupboard, ultimate symbol of vaudeville, propels us (the irony is not lost) into a world of high-octane theatre. This surreal parody, somewhere between café-théâtre and music hall, is admirably crafted by a troupe of nine actors, under the off-the-wall direction of Claude Vanessa. Expect a breathtaking finale.
Nicole Genovese slips her arm around boulevard theatre’s waist, holds him tight, declaring her adulation and undying love, before torturing him by tickling the soles of his feet. Jean-Pierre Thibaudat, Le Nouvel Observateur
