At dusk, with the onset of nightfall, dreams take shape. Macha Makeïeff swathes the hard-hitting text of the Great Russian poet in her imaginary, dream-like, musical vaudeville, set in 1920’s Russia ...a country plunged into civil war. With its wonderful aura of madness and the fantastic, the play vibrates to the beat of a comedic tempo. Against an enchanting backdrop, wild dreams narrate the humorous adventures and personal exile of thirty characters, from Sebastopol to Constantinople: stunning women lost in warfare, a crazed officer who sings Tchaikovsky, a tormented drug-addicted General, a ghostly Officer-in-Chief….
So many feverish, exalted heroes whose hearts have been probed by the great Boulgakov. The director, who draws on her own roots for inspiration, marvellously recreates the sense of nostalgia and revolt of the characters. This is an impressive troupe of actors and singer-musicians and one that totally grasps the essence of this eccentric and deeply relevant epic.
