“I’ll be revenged on the whole pack of you!” These are Malvolio’s final words before he disappears in Twelfth Night. But what if he came back? Tim Crouch, a rising playwright in the UK, gives him the opportunity for revenge. Malvolio, the ridiculous comic, comes back to give his version of events. This moving and hilarious whipping boy plays out his very own Twelfth Night, oscillating between Puritanism, the burlesque and dignity lost. We may laugh at his small-mindedness but perhaps we can see a little of ourselves in him too?
Tim Crouch mocks the audience, nurturing his creativity. His theatre is both demanding and entertaining and we are not left unscathed! Catherine Hargreaves rises to the challenge with her original, funny and modern staging, without detracting from the folly of Shakespeare.
